I Gave Up Timm’s Hill for Post Lake

Posted on June 26, 2024January 3, 2025 by Backcountry Fever

A wedding in Michigan City brought my wife and I back to the Midwest in June.  Since I’m originally from Chicago, and spent quite a bit of time in Wisconsin growing up, we thought it would be fun to spend a week up there afterwards.  Part of that plan was for me to do the highpoint while in the area.

However, we ended up having so much fun fishing with family, I found it hard to pull myself away to drive 1.5 hours from Post Lake to Timm’s Hill.  And as you well know, I have zero interest in driving to any of these state highpoints.  So my intent was to start near the south end of Spirit Lake.

I was going to catch the Ice Age Trail off WI-102 at the Rib Lake/Wood Lake trailhead.  This stroll though the Northwoods of Wisconsin would have been 2 miles on this National Scenic Trail before going another 8 on Timm’s Hill Trail.  I was looking at a 20-mile day with a 3 hour drive, alone, while everyone else would be reeling in fish after fish on Upper Post Lake.

I was torn and kept saying, “Oh, I’ll go tomorrow”.

Giving Up Hiking for Fishing

We also had a lakefront AirBnB and thought fishing off the dock would be good enough.  It wasn’t.  We immediately wished we had something lined up that got us out onto the water.  Then I remembered resorts like Bumber’s and Chief Lake Lodge who would rent boats to those who stayed with them.  The closest one I found that resembled my memory is Twin Oaks Resort on Lower Post Lake.  Unfortunately, they don’t rent boats but referred us to a guy who did.

Brian DeHart rented us this pontoon boat for the week, which was perfect for what we needed!

The boat was totally set up for fishing with lots of room for those who wanted to cast or relax as we drifted around.  It really made all the difference in the world for us that week…  everybody loved it!

We were catching everything from Perch to Crappies to Bluegills and Bass.

What we really wanted was to pull in a nice Northern Pike… or even a Muskie!

Instead, we just caught a lot of little Northerns that were fun to reel in but way too small to keep.

The Walleyes made for a decent fish fry…

…and the sunsets were spectacular.

We’re going to have to do this again, next time with more of a focus on getting Timm’s Hill.

Couldn`t have asked for a better day to climb Mount Adams. The conditions today (6/4) were absolutely perfect!

These 6 miles were waaaay different from the last six I did in LA. This 6-mile climb to the summit packed in 6,700 feet of elevation and took 6 hours 45 minutes (one-way).

Spent the weekend in California for a wedding and managed to squeeze in a quick hike, L.A.-style.

After reaching Mount Lee behind the Hollywood Sign, I couldn`t resist tagging two other peaks along the Aileen Getty Ridge Trail: Cahuenga Peak, the highest point in Griffith Park, and Burbank Peak, home to the famous Wisdom Tree.

The hike came in at 6 miles with just 1,000 feet of elevation gain and took only 2 hours.

Still chasing snow! Took my brother-in-law on his first-ever mountaineering experience. We went up Temple Couloir, over to Deseret Peak, and then slid down West Twin Couloir. Hard to beat spring days like this.

This was my 6th summit of Deseret Peak.

One of my favorite things to do between ski season and hiking season: kicking steps up a steep slope toward some snow-capped summit!

Another moderate day of mountaineering up the north slope of Mt. Superior, known as Cardiac Bowl. I`ve only been to this peak once before, from the typical summer trail, so it was way fun to get there from this direction.

With such good coverage and a big storm rolling in, I think Alta should stay open for at least another week!

It`s been a minute since I`ve had anything other than ski boots or hockey skates on my feet this winter. Gotta switch gears before the mountaineering season melts away here in Utah!

On this day last year—February 18—my team and I reached the summit of Aconcagua, the tallest peak in Argentina and the highest mountain in the Western Hemisphere at 22,837 feet.

I’ve enjoyed looking back on that expedition by rereading my day-by-day trip report from our climb.

👉 Link in bio: an 18-part guide covering the entire climb, plus pre-trip planning tips and post-expedition things to see and do around Mendoza.

Whether this is your first high-altitude objective or you’re adding Aconcagua to your mountaineering résumé, the guide will help you see why I chose the 360° Traverse, how to plan for your expedition, and what to expect each day on the mountain.
