DAY 5 – Trek to Plaza Argentina Base Camp
It was only our third day on the trail but after today, we will arrive at Plaza Argentina Base Camp. The day began with a frigid river crossing that involved several strands to navigate.
The river wasn’t more then knee-deep. However, the water was pretty cold at 7 in the morning with its glacial headwaters only 10 miles upstream!
The option to ride across on a mule was offered, but the majority of us wanted the full experience.
These gentle animals were so strong, they made the job they performed look so easy.
Looking back towards our last camp, we slowly and steadily worked our way up Relincho Canyon.
Filling our water along the way — so far so good with it still all unfiltered.
Peeking views of Aconcagua started to appear not long after.
In 9 more days, I hope to be taking a similar picture from up there!
A second river crossing at 11,800′ was much easier and refreshing now in the warmth of the sun.
After the first 20 miles, my feet were doing great inside these favorite Injini socks!
More guanacos at these higher elevations.
What a good group to be doing this expedition with — something that could easily make or break an expedition of this kind.
The mules were already on their way down after making their final trip to deliver our gear to base camp.
Very pleasant temps today above 12,000 feet.
Onward and upward as we hope to have weather like this on our summit day!
Soon after, we reach the top of Relincho Canyon and arrive at Plaza Argentina, Aconcagua’s base camp on 360° Traverse side.
We made it… and feeling great!
Welcome to Plaza Argentina
Today’s stats from my phone (since the track on my watch accidentally ended early!): 3,255′ of elevation in 7.5 miles.
Here are some totals for this lower portion of the 360° Traverse thus far:
- Distance: 25.35 miles
- Elevation gain: 6,546′
Tomorrow will be a rest and acclimatization day.
