DAY 3 – Trek to Pampa de Leñas
This adventure finally got real on Day 3 with the trek from Punta de Vacas to Pampa de Leñas.
The 360° Traverse route starts by following along Rio de las Vacas (Vacas River).
The terrain along this trail in February is very hot and dry–much like hiking in southern Utah or Arizona.
The mules pass by on the way to Pampa de Leñas, our first camp on this lower part of the 360° Traverse.
Making our way up the Vacas Valley was gradual and consistent. Heat was all we had to deal with.
Every now and then, we dipped our hats in a feeder stream to cool ourselves off.
Temps reached 91° F (32° C) on this summer afternoon in South America!
At times, it felt like we were hiking across the Grand Canyon (specifically the bottom section between The Box and Ribbon Falls)… temperature and all!
Our first night on the trail would be spent here at Pampa de Lenas.
This is what powered the lights and wi-fi… yes, Inka’s wi-fi coverage was pretty convenient to stay in touch with friends and family who were following along from home.
We were happy to arrive and find some shade for the remainder of the day.
I tracked trail data with my new COROS watch, bought specifically for this trip.
Today’s stats: 8 miles with only 1,700 feet of elevation gain, but in 90 degree heat and zero shade!
We will repeat this 2 more times as the fun continues into Day 4.
