The Interview That Made Me Reconsider Hydrogen Water

Posted on April 8, 2026May 28, 2026 by Backcountry Fever

As with my COROS watch, I’ve had an Echo Flask for about a year as well.  I started out consistent with it, but that soon faded.  Like most biohacking approaches, I couldn’t tell if it was actually doing anything.

Then I came across an interview with the inventor of the Echo Flask that made me reconsider:

Key Takeaways

Here’s what stood out to me after watching the hour-long interview:

  • The hydrogen water industry references more than 2,000 studies examining the effects of infused hydrogen gas (@12:07)
    • these studies have explored potential health applications related to Alzheimer’s (@30:47), diabetes (@43:08), cancer (@49:25), infertility (@50:08), weight loss (@1:01:15), hormone balancing (@ 1:00:15) and many others conditions (@52:00)
  • Running water through electrolysis creates a negative oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) of water, which was discussed as beneficial for gut health (@5:05)
    • Gut health can influence mood, hormones, immune function, food cravings, energy production, and mitochondrial function (@13:52)
  • Pre-made hydrogen water sold in stores is largely a gimmick because hydrogen permeates too easily through plastic, glass, and even metal.  By the time it reaches you, much of the hydrogen concentration has likely already leaked out (@12:20)
  • 96-99% of the bacteria in the gut should be anaerobic bacteria, beneficial bacteria that thrive in a negative electric potential and creates the right environment for your microbiome (@15:15)
    • Only 1-4% should be aerobic bacteria, which favor a positive electric potential and are linked to anxiety, depression, and sugar cravings (@26:53)
    • Our food cravings are based on the bacteria in the gut (@26:29)
      • anaerobic bacteria feed off fat and fiber, aerobic bacteria want carbs and sugar
  • The interview suggested that results should become noticeable after about two weeks of drinking hydrogen water (@17:09), with a recommended intake of 3-6 flasks per day, or roughly 70 ounces (@27:59)
    • However, not everyone will feel a difference after drinking hydrogen water, especially if they are already healthy (@59:00)
      • it has to do with hydrogen acting as a signal modulator, meaning it will manage what the body needs when it needs it
  • Hydrogen water wouldn’t be necessary if 90% of the population didn’t have gut dysfunction (@19:49)
  • Pesticides and other man-made chemicals are damaging our digestive environment and preventing us from properly absorbing nutrients (@24:21)
  • Hydrogen water is also said to help with cognitive function, mental clarity, focus, and other neurological issues (@29:38)
  • Water generated from an Echo Flask may also improve sleep quality (@34:08), athletic performance (@36:12), and energy production (@54:59)
  • Other claimed benefits include reducing oxidative stress and inflammation, both of which were described as major contributors to disease (@36:43)
  • Hydrogen is described as a selective antioxidant that only targets cell-damaging free radicals (@38:32), while helping to maintain balance in the body (@42:21)
  • Getting hydrogen back in our lives and improving gut health is essential for better overall health and longevity (@43:46)
    • “it fixes things” from your brain to your body to every system in between (@45:30)

Conclusion

As you can see, this interview presented enough scientific research and discussion around hydrogen water to make me recommit to using my Echo Flask as directed, with a goal of drinking 3–6 flasks per day as part of a proactive approach to health — even if the effects are subtle or difficult to notice.

Still chasing snow! Took my brother-in-law on his first-ever mountaineering experience. We went up Temple Couloir, over to Deseret Peak, and then slid down West Twin Couloir. Hard to beat spring days like this.

This was my 6th summit of Deseret Peak.

One of my favorite things to do between ski season and hiking season: kicking steps up a steep slope toward some snow-capped summit!

Another moderate day of mountaineering up the north slope of Mt. Superior, known as Cardiac Bowl. I`ve only been to this peak once before, from the typical summer trail, so it was way fun to get there from this direction.

With such good coverage and a big storm rolling in, I think Alta should stay open for at least another week!

It`s been a minute since I`ve had anything other than ski boots or hockey skates on my feet this winter. Gotta switch gears before the mountaineering season melts away here in Utah!

On this day last year—February 18—my team and I reached the summit of Aconcagua, the tallest peak in Argentina and the highest mountain in the Western Hemisphere at 22,837 feet.

I’ve enjoyed looking back on that expedition by rereading my day-by-day trip report from our climb.

👉 Link in bio: an 18-part guide covering the entire climb, plus pre-trip planning tips and post-expedition things to see and do around Mendoza.

Whether this is your first high-altitude objective or you’re adding Aconcagua to your mountaineering résumé, the guide will help you see why I chose the 360° Traverse, how to plan for your expedition, and what to expect each day on the mountain.

Scoping out snow levels for my annual winter campout this weekend. Yep, there`s enough to still make it fun!

Speaking of my multi-millioner friends (see link in the bio), I got to hike with them last weekend.

I had my mind set on doing a Grandeur Peak Yo-Yo for my first hike of the year. Thankfully, @gwhatco and @andeethatch were OK with slowing down for the day.

Not sure what I was thinking though, my thighs were so sore for the next two days. Hockey sure doesn`t use those same muscles like I thought it did.

Recovery definitely called for a few infrared sauna sessions afterwards!
